Tonee Bell is the first African-American with his own brand of computers in major retail. As CEO and founder of A Unity System, Inc. (AUS), Tonee developed and operates as supplier and distributor of a complete line of tablets, smart watches, desktops, laptops, servers and fully rugged field PCs. Bell has overcome incredible odds to compete in an industry dominated by major corporations. His story and the story of AUS have been described as that of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Mr. Bell grew up in a family of modest means in a small, rural town in North Carolina.
Prior to starting AUS in 1999, Tonee had an 16-year military career
that included responsibility for the US Coast Guard’s computer system, as a regional system manager and technical support specialist. Mr. Bell
supported many departments and thousands of staff members during his years of service. These experiences along with an expansive computer knowledge, telecommunications and software education help to provide the foundation for A Unity System’s business model.
With considerable business savvy and no financial backing Tonee’s company entered major retail - just eighteen months after inception - with Staples, and subsequently Kmart, Office Depot and currently, Walmart.com and American Airlines. AUS is headquartered in the Washington DC area. AUS was selected to supply computers in 2002 to General Motors through its GM Advantage Program. In December 2009, Bell signed a landmark agreement with CBS to showcase AUS computers on their network with the popular game show, The Price is Right.
It is not all sales and profit for Tonee Bell. His quest is for A Unity System to be seen as a neighborhood company that “pays it forward” and “gives back” through programs and alliances with schools and community based organizations. Bell’s civic and community involvement have been recognized in conjunction with his business accomplishments through honors that include the We Can Make a Difference Award; Indiana Black Expo Entrepreneur of the Year; and Marketing and Opportunities in Business and Entertainment Award.
A passionate mentor and sought after speaker and guest, Mr. Bell shares his business and technology expertise along with lessons learned on his journey. Business professionals, youth, entrepreneurs, educators, executives and everyday people have been inspired to pursue their dreams...and learned what it takes to beat the odds.
